Concello de Baiona

Also known as Ermida de Santa Marta. It is located on a small peninsula next to the beach of the same name. Romanesque in style, it was built in the 13th century. Its style was originally transitional Romanesque, of which only the south-facing doorway, with a semicircular arch and plain tympanum, remains. The chapel itself is rectangular in plan and consists of a nave, apse and atrium with portico.

In October 1585, the pirate Francis Drake landed with 1500 men on the Santa Marta peninsula in an attempt to conquer Monterreal. He set fire to the Chapel but did not achieve his goal after fierce resistance from the inhabitants of Baiona.

In Galicia, it is not common to find temples near the sea, as in times of good weather the populations moved to more inland areas to avoid being plundered by pirates. For this reason, it is normal for this type of construction to be further away from the coast.
