Within the town, we can find several commemorative monuments that celebrate the arrival to the New World. One of them is the Monolith of the Arribada, located in the Plaza de Pedro Castro. It was inaugurated in 1965 and promoted by the Institute of Hispanic Culture.
The author of this work is Ángel Fernández González, known as "Angelito Vernet". Born in San Pedro de A Ramallosa in 1910, he was trained by outstanding masters and throughout his life he sculpted numerous works. Among them, we can highlight the ornaments in stately homes in the region and Vigo, religious elements in the old collegiate church of Baiona, the spiral staircase of the Virgen de la Roca, coats of arms such as the one in the Parador Conde de Gondomar and the one on the façade of the Council of Nigrán, as well as crosses in parish cemeteries, among others.
The block of stone used for the Monolith was transported from Os Marcos, an area in the A Groba mountain, in the parish of Baíña. Its dimensions are impressive, with a height of 4 metres and a weight of 17 tonnes. A 14-wheel lorry and the collaboration of 11 men were required for its transport.
As an additional recommendation, to learn more about the link that Baiona has with the "discovery of America", it is suggested that you do the following the Pinzoniana da Route.
