Mount Boi and the Monterreal Peninsula
Mount Boi is located on the Monterreal Peninsula and is one of the first landmarks that stands out upon arriving in Baiona, housing the Monterreal Fortress and the Parador of Baiona. This is one of the most emblematic and frequented sites in the town due to its proximity to the center and the port.
The walk around Mount Boi is short, with less than 2 km, and is suitable for family enjoyment. Along the way, a great variety of landscapes can be admired, from the calm waters of the Bay of Baiona to the might of the Atlantic Ocean. Notable views include some of the beaches like Barbeira and Os Frades, the Open-air Thalasso (currently unused), the peninsula of Monteferro (in Nigrán), and the Estelas and Cíes Islands.
It is a privileged place to watch the sunset, where stone benches offer the opportunity to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
This tour is a must-see for visitors. Moreover, for those who wish for a longer walk, they can continue with the route through the Monterreal Fortress, which runs at a higher altitude within the peninsula, offering an even broader perspective of the area.
A little more about the Monterreal Fortress
The Monterreal Peninsula has historically been a key strategic point for maritime defense in the Rías Baixas due to its location. The Monterreal Fortress was built between the 11th and 16th centuries and served as a strategic defense point against maritime attacks, which was essential for the protection of the Galician coast for centuries. Throughout its history, it has been the scene of multiple significant events, from invasions to diplomatic agreements, gaining great relevance in the 15th century with the arrival of the Caravel La Pinta, which transformed the fortress into a walled town ordered by the Catholic Monarchs. In the 16th century, Baiona prospered by completing its walls and receiving the privilege of international trade, positioning itself among the most important ports of Galicia. However, over time, its military prominence diminished in favor of Vigo, leaving the fortress gradually uninhabited by the 19th century. Later, the Ministry of Information and Tourism acquired the property, building a new parador in the place of the former residence of the Marquis of Pazo da Merced.
