Museum of the House of Navigation (Casa Carvajal) in Baiona
The House of Navigation Museum in Baiona, located in the iconic Casa Carvajal, is a municipal institution dedicated to highlighting the deep historical relationship between the Royal Town of Baiona and the sea. Located in the heart of Baiona's Historical and Artistic Ensemble, this museum is housed in the century-old Casa María Carvajal, popularly known as the House of Pacifiers due to its unique architectural finishes. These facilities house a valuable collection of documents and historical objects that tell the story of the urban, social, and maritime evolution of Baiona, particularly its prominence in the great Atlantic navigations.
The House of Navigation dedicates its ground floor to contextualizing the arrival of the caravel "La Pinta" at the port of Baiona, commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón. This section offers a unique view of late-medieval Baiona, which had been a reference port in Atlantic navigation for two centuries. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an immersive virtual tour of the caravel Pinta, accessible to all visitors.
The first floor of the museum offers a narrative that begins in the 16th century, showing the territorial expansion under the reign of Philip II, the maritime trade and the advances in ancient navigation. It also highlights its section on fishing in the 20th century, which established Baiona as an important fishing port. Among its treasures is the privilege of Philip II from 1593, cannons recovered from Cape Silleiro, and ancient portolan charts, offering a fascinating perspective on the maritime trade of that era.
Outside, a rear garden adds a recreational space, accessible via Rúa do Reloxo, complementing the experience. Additionally, a visit to the replica of the caravel Pinta in the dock is recommended to better understand the impact of Christopher Columbus's expedition and the Pinzón brothers.
This museum is part of the so-called Pinzonian Route, which allows visitors to explore other facets of Baiona's maritime history, enjoying the charm and beauty of this picturesque town.
