Statue of Alfonso IX in Baiona

At the traffic circle that gives access to the fishing port, we find the statue in honor of King Alfonso IX who, on May 7, 1201, granted the Town Charter that frees the town from its servile condition and vassalage to which it was subjected.

By joining the towns of Erizana and Baredo, the present-day Baiona was founded, whose name was imposed by the monarch on what was then the town of Erizana.

The statue was unveiled in 2001 on the eighth centenary of the event. It is the work of sculptor Juan Oliveira and was created in bronze with a weight of 2,000 kilos.
