Concello de Baiona

In the charming town of Baiona, stands an imposing commemorative monument that pays tribute to the historic encounter of the New World: the statue of Martín Alonso Pinzón. In his role as captain of the caravel Pinta, he played a crucial role alongside Columbus in the momentous voyage that led to the discovery of America. This monument bears witness to his valuable contribution to exploration and invites us to reflect on the importance of that encounter that changed the course of history.

This monument was donated by the city of Palos de la Frontera, in a gesture of brotherhood between the two towns in 1975. The artwork, created by sculptor León Ortega, was inaugurated during the festivities of the 487th anniversary of that historic encounter.

The sculpture, a gift from the Royal Pinzonian Palosfil Society, evokes the arrival of Martín Alonso Pinzón in Baiona, bearing the exciting news of the discovery of America. It serves as a permanent reminder of the significance of that event and its impact on history.

Furthermore, this statue of Martín Alonso Pinzón is part of the Pinzonian Route, a journey that invites us to explore the historic and emblematic sites related to the Discovery expedition. Following this route immerses us in Pinzón's captivating voyage and allows us to relive the key moments of that encounter.
